Palawan

The Philippines’ last ecological frontier with plant and wildlife biodiversity this stunning archipelago province regularly tops the travel lists for the world’s best beaches and islands.

Palawan’s best-known spots are El Nido and Coron with their spectacular dive sites, but there are also more off-the-beaten-track locations such as Port Barton, Taytay, Roxas, Brooke’s Point, and San Vicente to discover, with their promise of authentic food and local experiences including wildlife sanctuary visits.

Meanwhile, the capital Puerto Princesa City is a great place to soak up some history at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and WWI site Plaza Cuartel, as well as to shop and eat.

With its beaches, lakes, waterfalls, mineral springs, rivers, and creeks, Palawan is a place where activities in the great outdoors take on a new and magical dimension. Diving is a big deal here – expect to see spotted manta rays, green sea turtles, and nocturnal marine creatures including seahorses, shrimp, and cat sharks. Meanwhile, waterfall swimming and hiking, jungle trekking, and cave boat trips are among the array of other stand-out pursuits on offer. And don’t miss birdwatching at some of the country’s best sites, where migratory birds are joined by 15 species endemic to this province.

The majority of your activities in Palawan are highly dependent on the weather because they’re located outdoors. Where to Eat in Palawan

Apart from the natural sites and exciting activities that await you in Palawan, a must-try experience is to feast on the local cuisine and dine in the top-rated restaurants. In this section, we’ll let you in on the unique local cuisine of Palawan and some highly-recommended restaurants and bars that you should check out when traveling to different destinations in the province.

Local Cuisine

As an island destination, seafood is abundant in Palawan. You can feast on fresh fish, crabs, shrimps, lobsters, and more at an affordable price compared to those served in metropolitan cities. These are also served in island-hopping tours in Palawan, where your boat crew serves a hefty spread in one of your beach or island stops.

Apart from seafood, Palawan is also known for an exotic delicacy called tamilok (woodworm) that are freshly harvested from wood and eaten raw or cooked in vinegar like ceviche. In El Nido, a must-try dish is the Bird’s Nest Soup that is made from nests of swiftlets formed by its saliva.

These nests are sourced from the crevices of the limestone cliffs of El Nido. El Nido translates to “The Nest” because of the abundance of this ingredient in the town.
